Certified Production Technician (CPT)
Overview
The MSSC System awards “Certified Production Technician (CPT)” certificates to individuals who pass any or all of its four Production modules: Safety; Quality Practices & Measurement; Manufacturing Processes & Production; and Maintenance Awareness. Applicable to all sectors of manufacturing, the MSSC goal is to assess 40% of the nation’s entry-level and incumbent production workforce—a strategy for providing industry with a future pipeline of skilled workers.
MSSC offers industry a new set of tools to ensure that both entering and incumbent workers are flexible, easily trainable, and highly motivated knowledge workers able to keep pace with technological change—the “Industrial Athlete of the Future.” The key activities against which MSSC trains and assesses workers is attached, together with a list of testimonials.
Just as “ASE” (Automotive Service Excellence) certification is the standard for quality in the automotive repair sector, the MSSC Certified Production Technician (CPT) credential will set the quality standard in our nation’s factories. MSSC benefits to manufacturers include:
- A pipeline of skilled workers by embedding MSSC certification training into the schools
- Decreased recruitment costs by providing job candidates with industry-recognized credentials
- Elimination of remedial training costs by providing well prepared workers
- A diagnostic tool to benchmark incumbent workers against a high-performance national standard

The courses, training, assessments and credentials are all based upon the four critical work functions (“Modules”) for production, as defined by MSSC’s industry-led, nationally validated skill standards:
- Safety. NOTE: The Safety course and assessment includes cross-functional employability skills (e.g. communications, teamwork, customer awareness, workplace conduct, training ability). MSSC thus strongly recommends that individuals take the safety course and assessment first.
- Quality Practices & Measurement.
- Manufacturing Processes and Production
- Maintenance Awareness
Credentials
MSSC issues industry-recognized, nationally portable credentials. These include:
- An attractive “Certificate” to individuals who meet the cut score for the individual modular assessments in the 4 critical functions listed above.
- A diploma-style, larger “Certified Production Technician (CPT)” certificate to individuals who pass all four modular assessments.
MSSC includes with its certificates an MSSC Production Technician Work Standards document, suitable for sharing with an employer, that lists the skill and knowledge areas covered by MSSC Assessments.
